Tennis Golf comparison and response

There was a great comment made on the blog "World's Hardest Sport". Golf met all the criteria set.

The mental component of being watched at all times by thousands of people.

Tactically it is very difficult as the same golf course can play different from day to day

Technically it is an extremely demanding sport as a degree off here or there, or a different swing path can alter the flight of the ball

I'll take the three components and break them down.

Maybe the thing that separates golf and tennis but yet makes them very similar. They are both individual sports to an extent. Golf doesn't have various number of teammates who you can rely on to make the last shot or the winning pass, but it does have a caddie who the golfer can communicate with throughout all 18 holes asking for advice. Tennis has NO ON COURT coach. You are the player, the coach, and the teammates all in one.

Tactically, golf is extremely tough as the same golf course can change every round of a tournament. In some cases, it can change that very same round. In tennis, the conditions can change as well as most tournaments are outside. So what separates the two? The fact that you have control of every single shot that you hit in golf to absolutely NO complete control in tennis (exception the serve). Control is taken out of a tennis player's hands as you have an opponent that is hitting you the ball. In golf you don't have two players trying to hit to each other's greens. Each player takes care of their ball and their shot.

There will be a whole discussion on the technical aspect of tennis throughout this blog but I will decipher the golf and tennis technicality enough to prove the difference. Ready? MOVEMENT and TIME! In golf you can think about what kind of shot you want to hit for an eternity before you actually hit the ball. In tennis, you have less than a second to know what shot you're going to hit, where to hit it and move to the ball to actually do these things. Golf is definitely a game of immense technical skill but imagine playing golf where you have to run to every shot that you hit, have no time to look over your ball and hit the shot as you're moving. Even though it would be extremely interesting it would cause some chaos.

Great comment by one of our readers on our post. After reading this I hope I was able to clarify the two even more. It definitely sets a ground for more conversation. Tennis is the most difficult sport in the world.

  1. Great thoughts! I agree with them in many respects. However, if I were to play devil's advocate, a good case could be made that having more time actually makes the mental side of golf more difficult. Most of tennis is reacting. There isn't a lot of thinking going on. Tennis is mostly about establishing winning patterns of play. If I had to think about every shot with no time constraints, i would be extremely nervous.
Another point could be made that you have to have more focus in golf due to the fact that one bad hole can affect your overall score, when in tennis, you can have many bad points, bad games and even a bad set and still win. Look at the women's game. I am so tired of seeing players, specifically on the women's side, winning the first set at 6-0 or 6-1 and then losing the next set at the same score.
