Serena has really established herself as the best player in the world, but it's not by much. She pulled out a rabbit and a US Open title today by beating Victoria Azarenka 6-2 2-6 7-5 in today's final. Serena, showing how mentally tough she is, was facing defeat when Azarenka served for the match at 5-4 in the third set. Serena fought hard, broke Vika's serve, and before we knew it was down on the ground celebrating her fourth US Open title. This one has to be a sweet one as she has had her issues in NYC the last couple of years.
To put her title in perspective, Serena has now compiled 15 majors putting her only three behind Chris Evert and Martina
Navratilova. Her first title came in 1999 making it 13 years between titles, which is very impressive in tennis terms. Most careers are a handful of years, Serena is two weeks shy of 31 and doesn't show signs of slowing down. Depending on her schedule going forward, Serena has a good chance of claiming the #1 ranking. Even though she is not ranked #1 on the WTA tour, she is seen as the best by her peers and the spectators.
As for Victoria Azarenka, it was the fist time in a long time that she had been competitive with a player that has owned her. With a 1-9 head-to-head record, not many people gave her a chance of winning and after a first set dominated by Serena, those same people saw this match as a quick one. Vika showed guts and almost had the glory. She came back winning the second set and served for the match at 5-4 in the third. Unfortunately for her, she was facing the best player at the US Open in 2012. Expect Vika to come back even better next year and keep dominating the tour, well, maybe expect for Serena.
Congratulations to Serena! It's great to have the US Open won by an American!
