Usually in the previews, I break down the top four potential contenders and analyze their road to the title. Today, I am going to flip it all around and focus on just one woman, Serena Williams. Three reasons why:
1) Azarenka, Kvitova, Sharapova, Stosur, Clijsters, Li Na are all in the top half
2) Serena is seen as the best player in the world by most
3) Her poor showings the last few Opens will be motivators for her
Now you can see why this will be short and brief. Serena's toughest challenge could be Caroline Wozniacki in the quarterfinals. Caroline has a record of 1-5 against Serena which is not favorable. She also pulled out of New Haven with a bad knee just today. Huge edge to Serena. Expect her to move on handily into the semis.
We shouldn't see many tirades by Serena this year at the Open. If she can fend off her wondering mind she will find herself holding the trophy. |
In the semis, surprise player of the year Aggi Radwanska should be waiting for her, but with a 0-3 record and Serena playing the way she has this year, expect a quick match.
Serena should be in good rhythm, rested, and ready to take the title against any of the women that come from the top half. By the time one of these weary warriors makes it out of the "battle pit" that is the top half of the draw, they will not be in tip top shape needed to beat Williams. Serena might finally conquer the demons she has developed in New York the last few years and take the title that has eluded her since 2008.
