Love? This is a perfect day to try to decipher the mystery of where it comes from. Why does it carry such a negative meaning in tennis? Flowers, hugs, kisses, this is suppose to be love, not a big fat ZERO!
Tennis' background is somewhat foggy so there are myths on how this Egg came to be. Some in fact, credit the word "l'oeuf" which means egg in French. The egg was seen as an object that resemble the shape of a zero. Also, the egg is something that is unusable until it hatches or is cooked, meaning that it is "nothing". This romance language gave a negavite connotation to Love, ironic.
The English are the ones that are actually credited for making the connection between "l'oeuf" and "Love". Not because they had a great meaning behind it, but rather because they couldn't pronounce the word. This upset the French very much and they, in fact, went back to saying Zero.
Even though some of these urban legends are foggy and not proven. They definitely give our sport a tongue-in-cheek reference to "Amor".
"Today is the only day where LOVE is a good thing!"
