After the fireworks we saw yesterday at the AO, we had more of a subdued day with a couple big surprises. Tsonga was knowcked out by Nishikori and the biggest one, Serena was bounced out by Makarova.
Tsonga's match was one full of unforced errors and uneven sets, but at the end of the day Nishikori demonstrated that he is a player that will be a mess to handle. Battling the heat both players fought until the 5th set where Nishikori, conserving energy on Tsonga's serve after he broke him, Kei, took the frenchman down 6-3.
Serena's match, CORRECTION, Makarova's match dealt with a lethargic Serena that just didn't look all that good. She was finished quickly by the Russian 2 & 3. Makarova has now moved through the draw beating Serena, Zvonareva and Kanepi, all seeded players.
The emotional match of the day was Hewitt taking on the world #1 Djokovic. After a nervous 1st set by Hewitt, we bit down on the rest of the match making it more competitive and taking a set away from Nole; 1st set he has lost all tourney. At the end of the match, we are left to wonder if we have seen the last of Lleyton at the Aussie!
